The Shimano Tiagra Two Speed game reels are arguably THE benchmark for big game fishing reels. Loved by the professional charter boat crews and the passionate amateur angler alike, they are immaculately engineered and looks just like they handle; ready to take on any fish you could possibly find to hook up and reel'em in.
The Tiagra range start at the nimble Tiagra 12 and ends with the imposing Tiagra 130. This gives all anglers a great choice of equipment to handle any situation, whether it is chasing a line-record game fish or trying to win tournaments where equipment cannot fail.
As we all know, one of the fundamental aspects of this sport is that the fish we seek are capable of fighting for hours, repeatedly making long runs that can really heat up a drag. Heat buildup can cause the settings to change, leading to insufficient pressure being put on a fish or, at worst, a broken line. Fortunately, Shimano’s Hydrothermal Drag System automatically compensates for any heat buildup, thereby maintaining the original drag setting. What’s more, the Tiagra’s pre-lubricated graphite drag washer is impervious to salt water and will always operate smoothly.
Another major rule of game fishing is that the leverage created by an angler in a game chair or standup harness with a big marlin, tuna or shark on the end of the line places an enormous amount of pressure on the tackle. That’s why Tiagra’s one piece frame is machine-cut from an aluminium tube to a thickness of 7mm (try to find one that’s thicker). It’s also why Tiagra has A-RB bearings, heavy-duty stainless steel gears, and a two speed shifting mechanism where the pinion and drive gears are continuously meshed.
The Tiagra series also features a Calibrated Pre Set Drag Knob, which has detents that adjust in approximately half pound increments. It is, however, only a reference guide to be used when setting the drag, and is no substitute for doing it through a loaded rod with a set of scales.
The handle knob on the larger reels is counter-weighted so that it always rests in an easy-to-grab vertical position. At 89 decibels, the super loud ratchet is also the loudest of any production reel. It also comes with a brand new ergonomical power handle (not pictured).
