Keiths biggest Nile Perch of the trip at 65lbs.
Taken on a Rapala Magnum Shadrap using 10 kilo Amnesia line
In November last year I took a group of six anglers to try our luck on those
mega sized Nile perch in Lake Nasser, Egypt. Wow what a trip! This lake
is almost 500 kilometers in length and at it's widest point some 25 kilometers,
now that's a lake!
We booked with 'African angler' run by Tim Bailey. He has been operating nomadic charters on lake Nasser for almost 9 years and does such a professional job. After a night in Cairo we flew out to Aswan to be met by Tim's crew, a quick hour's drive to a point down the lake and we were on our boats - two anglers per boat - and heading out to fish heaven.
Martin Edwards with his best Nile Perch, 78lbs.
Taken on a Halco Crazy Deep using 15 kilo Bionic Braid
The first day was slow with only a couple of smaller perch caught but the
second day we managed fish up to 55 lbs. Taken on halco crazy deep s and
rapala magnum shad raps. We had beefed up these lures with owner split rings
and forged owner hooks, which ensured we stayed connected to these denizens
of the deep.
For the next five days we trolled around the middle section of the dam,
meeting the mother ship at lunch time and in the evening for meals and much
needed showers. The Nubian guides and crew were great and nothing was too
much trouble. They constantly apologized for the unusually slow fishing
action.
The ferocious fangs of a Tiger Fish. These rouges
readily take lures or bait and can grow up to 10 kilos
But, that's fishing and although we didn't break any records we caught fish
up to 90 lbs and in one last hot bite during the last mornings trolling
I caught five fish in less than 90 minutes, with the biggest going 65 lbs.
This gave me a taste of just how good the fishing can be on Lake Nasser
and gave me the incentive to return and try for one of those 100 lbs. plus
Nile perch that are frequently caught.
Another species we caught regularly was the tiger fish. These fearsome looking
critters grow up to 10 kilos; however the best we managed was 2 kilos.
The attached photos tell the rest of the story, and, if you ever get the chance i would encourage you to try Lake Nasser...it's an awesome experience.
Bamaga at the Tip of Cape York!
Barra were on the chew for two days only and the best went 3.5 kilos.
Between Matthew and Keith, they caught and released 16 barra
During mid January my son, Matthew, and I fished the waters around Bamaga
at the tip of Cape York. Our guides were Warren Strevens of 'Cape York rod
& rifle" and Tim Freebody of 'Custom Sport Fishing'. Although a little risky
going at that time of year as the wet season was in full swing we had a
ball, even though we experienced some heavy tropical storms.
Matthews best GT to date, a 20 kilo fish that took a Halco Crazy Deep lure...and fought...and fought
Fishing the waters of the Jackey Jackey river system we lure fished for
Barra, Jacks and Fingermark. The best Barra went 3.5 kilos, jacks up to
1.7 kilos and Fingermark to 5 kilos. The outside action trolling deep diving
lures gave Matthew his best GT. to date...20 kilos which he followed up
with a 15 kilo specimen.
Unusual captures included a 4 kilo Longtom which fought like a mini marlin.
In spite of the weather we had a great week fishing, a big thanks to our guides for their enthusiasm and 'Never Say Die' attitude.

An extra long "Longtom". At over a metre in length this
feisty fish leapt all over the ocean. Check out the fangs!
Keith with an average size Fingermark, at 1.5 kilos.
